Green Festival
Washington,
D.C. hosts world’s largest
environmental expo this weekend
WASHINGTON,
D.C. – When the world’s largest environmental
expo comes to town this weekend, the district’s own
Eco-Green Living store will be showcased as the region’s
premiere green business.
Eco-Green Living (formerly Future Green), opened by native
Washingtonians Keith and Donna Ware early this year, is an
organic and fair-trade home and family store. The Logan Circle
mainstay attracts shoppers from across the metro area looking
for everything from energy-saving water heaters and solar
powered roof fans to non-toxic paints and organic clothing.
The
store’s
popularity has boomed; so much so that its revenues have
jumped 20 percent in
eight months. The
company has garnered support from political and business
leaders such as Democratic Mayoral Nominee Adrian Fenty and
Co-op America Executive Director Alisa Gravitz.
“Eco-Green Living is becoming a way of life in the
D.C. area,” said Keith Ware, owner of Eco-Green Living. “Our
store is the place to buy the most innovative products in
the world from the sustainable marketplace. Every day we
sell to new entrepreneurs, families, and individuals committed
to doing good and saving money.”
In
addition to walk-in customers, such venerable D.C. institutions
as
Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ)
are also using products
sold by Eco-Green Living. FONZ, which operates the National
Zoo’s stores, will feature a dozen of Eco-Green Living’s
sustainably harvested bamboo display shelves in its newly
renovated Asia Trail gift shop in the Zoo’s Visitor
Center.
“Every day we encourage our visitors and members to
be environmentally friendly,” said FONZ spokesman Matt
Olear. “We want to walk the talk and set an example
by purchasing eco-friendly materials. Using Eco-Green Living’s
products allows us to achieve that goal while supporting
a local company and helping to build a regional green economy.”
Eco-Green Living supplies a growing number of home building
and re-modeling contractors. An expanded green home show
room opens this winter. During the two-day Green Festival,
Eco-Green Living will raffle home and building products with
a combined value of more than $6,000.
Tickets for the Green Festival, held at the Washington,
D.C. Convention Center, are a budget-friendly $15 per person.
The Green Festival is a joint project of two national nonprofit
organizations, Global Exchange and Co-Op America. The expo
brings together local and national socially responsible businesses,
environmental, social justice, and community organizations,
and up to 25,000 participants for two days of events.
